Artworks Damaged When Exhibit Moved, Students Say

Artworks from a college exhibit that was shut down because parks officials thought it was inappropriate for visitors to the public war memorial that housed it were damaged or misplaced when they were removed by the school, students said yesterday.
"Students found their work improperly packaged in garbage bags, much of it irreparably damaged and some pieces missing," the students said in an e-mailed statement describing their examination of the art on Saturday.
The Brooklyn College students' exhibit, which included representations of male genitalia, watercolor paintings of gay sex, and a live rat, opened early this month in the city-owned Brooklyn War Memorial, a World War II commemoration used as gallery space by the college.
The Department of Parks & Recreation closed it the next day, saying an agreement with the school stipulated that art exhibits at the memorial be "appropriate for families."
Carrie Fucile, who built a 7-by-8-by-10-foot wooden house for the show, found barely a trace of her art in the two rooms in which the students' dismantled works were stored at the college campus's Roosevelt Hall, the students' statement said. Pieces of the installation were used as packaging for other artworks, and most of the $20,000 worth of digital equipment used for the show was found jumbled together in boxes or trash bags, it said.
The rat was taken home by a student the day the exhibit was closed. A spokesman for the college didn't immediately return a message left on his after-hours cell phone number yesterday.
The 18-student show, a graduation requirement, is the thesis for the masters of fine arts degree and had been scheduled to run through May 25.
After it was closed, the student artists agreed to remount it later this month in nearby retail space donated by a local developer if the school upheld an agreement to provide logistical and financial support for it. They said Sunday that the plan was up in the air because of the damage to the artworks.
They said they still planned to file a freedom-of-speech lawsuit against the city, the parks department and the college over the show's removal from the Brooklyn War Memorial.
The granite and limestone memorial, in Cadman Plaza, is dedicated to Americans who served in World War II. It has a hall with an honor roll listing the names of those who died and features larger-than-life statues of a male warrior, symbolizing victory, and a female with a child, representing family.

I have to know: Has the administration yet to say one public thing -- anything at all -- that explains how and why they allowed this to unfold the way it did? How and why the damage occurred?
Is the Brooklyn College community willing to tolerate an administration that doesn't even openly and honestly explain its actions?
If this had happened at any other legitimate MFA program you better believe the department head and dean would be up in arms.
Who is the chair? Who is the dean? Why hasn't anyone heard from them? And HOW CAN THEY REMAIN SILENT WHILE THEIR STUDENTS' THESISES WERE DESTROYED?
Isn't there anyone there to protect and/or advocate for the students?
I don't know the formal mechanism for this, but the program must be somehow censured, or at least a resolution passed by the relevant art accediting body, to send a message that the program has endagered if not destroyed its viability.
And if the senior administration do not discipline VP Little for his careless and negligent removal, then I -- who began watching this sad episode with cofidence that the Brooklyn administration somehow make it right -- have now lost full confidence in their ability to do their jobs.
Given the continued botched situation and the gross incompetence of the PR effort, the failure to explain their actions, and the lack of an apology, this game is over.
It is now a certified failure.
Would you want your Kids to see this display? How about you Mom or Grandmother. Everything needs rules. Most people do not want to see this stuff so you cannot display it in a public place.
The program should lose it's accreditation.. then be dissolved. They could fire everyone, including those tenured, and start over.
Where is the College Art Association?
That said, the president, provost, gallery director and head of the department should lose their jobs because they let this happen and were totally unprofessional. They did nothing to protect their students from the illegal activity of destroying and censoring their work and then devaluing their diplomas.

When I was in the MFA program at Brooklyn College I used to think that maybe all the NYC MFA programs had similar problems and craziness as BC.
But really this whole episode kind of reveals how much the faculty and staff really cares about the students. Not too much.
This might be the straw that breaks the camel's back. All the tenured faculty resting on their asses for retirement need to go. Wipe the slate. My diploma is confirmed to be an Edsel.

penises have been much more visible than the first sculture mentioned (done by a heterosexual man) in greek, roman and renaissance sculture and paintings of christ, napolean, various saints, etc. throughout history.
this is not about anyone's opinion about the art, but it's first amendment right to exist. also the college's own requirement for it to be shown.

FYI- I used to work for the Sun. While the reporters are pretty much standard white-bread New Yorkers / New Englanders, the senior staff are all idealogues, and plainly don't know what a spellchecker is.

Maybe a toddler can't read it, but what about a 9 or 11 year old?
My point is that the majority of parents would not want to see this stuff, so it should be should in a private hall not a public one.
There was a rule proposed last year to limit public showing of art that "demonstrates a lack of proper respect for public morals or conduct or that includes material that is religious, political or sexual in nature." Since this rule was rejected, it seems that the majority are in favor of showing works that go to where this MFA art show went.
Also, no laws were broken in the material of the show. So I'd say the majority of New Yorkers aren't in favor of banning male nudity or any text. See the Monitor and Merrimack Monument in Greenpoint or possibly the Maine Monument in Columbus Circle for examples of male nudity in public parks. I think this is your problem, not the problem of a majority.
This has all been covered in numermous first amendment cases over the last 20 years. The law protects speech, this speech in particular.
The compromise that could have been struck would have been to put a label on the door, warning the public that some people might consider some work innapropriate for children, giving the public a choice. Since there was NO sexually explicit images, to repeat NO SEXUALLY EXPLICIT IMAGES in any of the work, that label would have nipped it in the bud.
The director of the gallery thought that the work was so PG, she didn't do this. Or she didn't know to do this.

I'm inclined to agree with proudly, censoring art is wrong, I dont feel that nudity, or sex is wrong to display publically we were born naked, get over yourselves! The human body is a piece of art.
